Paris was one of the fastest growing cities during the 17th and 18th century. Many new advancements came to be during the time and there was a strong desire to grow and expand. From that, Paris grew and began to develop into the marshlands at the outskirts of the city. People were buying land and building on it leading to city squares and places that are still seen today. Baroque architecture was being used in the development and was a huge part of the plans and designs of the era. Because of people using carts and carriages more often at the time, grand boulevards were made in order to provide for new advancements. It is in this desire of growth and development that we see some of the seeds that led to modernism in Paris. A need to change according to the times and according to the need of the city ultimately led to modernist plans, some of which were carried out and some of which were completely discarded.
